AM4 just turned ten, and somehow it’s still the socket everyone’s talking about. I didn’t see that coming. A couple of years ago, the advice was simple: skip AM4, go AM5, done. Then DDR5 prices went through the roof, and suddenly a cheap AM4 board with DDR4 started looking really smart again.

I’ll be upfront here. I game on laptops these days, a Ryzen 7 260 machine now, and an Acer Predator with an Intel i5-8300H before that. But I’ve followed AMD’s desktop chips for a long time, and picking the best AM4 CPU right now is honestly more interesting than it’s been in years. So here are my picks and the reasoning behind each one.

What Is the Best AM4 CPU Right Now?

The best AM4 CPU for most people is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which AMD brought back as a 10th Anniversary Edition at $349 in June 2026. For tighter budgets, the Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X still does the job for well under half that. Everything else sits somewhere in between.

Here’s my quick AM4 CPU tier list:

Pick

CPU

Cores / Threads

Best for

Best overall

Ryzen 7 5800X3D (10th Anniversary)

8 / 16

Gaming, the fastest AM4 CPU in games

Best value X3D

Ryzen 7 5700X3D

8 / 16

Gaming, if you find leftover stock

Best budget

Ryzen 5 5600 / 5600X

6 / 12

Budget gaming builds

Best for work

Ryzen 9 5950X

16 / 32

Rendering, streaming, editing

Best newer 16-core

Ryzen 9 5900XT

16 / 32

Work plus gaming

Sure, it’s a short list. That’s kind of the point. The best CPU for AM4 is almost always a Ryzen 5000 chip, because they’re the newest and fastest the socket supports. Any older Ryzen AM4 CPU, from the 1000, 2000, or 3000 series, still works. I just wouldn’t buy one new in 2026.

Best AM4 CPU for Gaming

The best AM4 CPU for gaming is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Its 96MB of L3 cache gives games a huge boost, and it’s still the fastest AM4 CPU in games, full stop. Nothing else on the socket gets close.

There’s a story behind its comeback too. AMD stopped making the original 5800X3D in late 2024. Then RAM prices exploded, and at CES 2026, AMD said it was definitely looking at AM4 products again. A few months later, the 10th Anniversary Edition showed up at Computex. Same 8 cores, same 4.5GHz boost, same 105W TDP, just $100 cheaper than the original launch price.

The Ryzen 7 5700X3D CPU

The Ryzen 7 5700X3D CPU is basically a slightly slower 5800X3D. Same cache, lower clocks. In games, the gap is small, usually a few percent.

The catch? AMD moved it to end of life in 2025. So you’re hunting for leftover stock, and some listings are priced silly. If you find one cheap, grab it. If not, the 5800X3D is the safer buy now.

I’ve written about the best AMD CPU for gaming across both sockets too. On AM4 specifically, though, the X3D chips are the only real answer for a gaming build. The best AM4 gaming CPU has extra cache. That’s just how it is.

Best Budget AM4 CPU

The best budget AM4 CPU is the Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X. Both have 6 cores and 12 threads, and both handle modern games fine with a mid-range GPU. They usually cost a lot less than the X3D chips.

The 5600X is a touch faster out of the box. The plain 5600 is a touch cheaper. Honestly, in games, you won’t feel much difference between them. Pick whichever is cheaper on the day you buy. For pure value, this is the best AM4 socket CPU, no question.

What About the 5600XT and 5600T?

AMD launched these two in October 2024. They’re basically refreshed 5600-class chips. The 5600XT boosts to 4.7GHz, only 100MHz more than the 5600X. At launch, the 5600XT and 5600T cost more than the older 5600X, which made no sense to me. They’re fine chips. Just don’t pay extra for the new name.

Is a Ryzen 5 Enough for Gaming?

For 1080p and 1440p gaming with a mid-range card, yes. A 5600 paired with something like an RX 7600 or RTX 4060 is a solid budget combo. If you’re planning a higher-end card, like the ones in my RX 9070 XT guide, the 6-core chip will start holding it back. That’s where the X3D chips earn their price.

Best AM4 CPU for Work and Streaming

The best AM4 CPU for work is the Ryzen 9 5950X. It has 16 cores and 32 threads, and it chews through rendering, video editing and streaming. If your PC does more than gaming, this is the best CPU for AM4 socket builds.

The Ryzen 9 5900XT is the other option. AMD launched it in July 2024, and it also has 16 cores. It’s basically a slightly lower-clocked 5950X sold at a lower price. For streaming while gaming, either chip works.

Gaming vs Work: Pick One Priority

Here’s the thing: the 5950X isn’t better than the 5800X3D in games. It’s usually slower. The extra cores don’t help most games much, while the extra cache does. So decide what matters more to you. Gaming first means X3D. Work first means 16 cores.

Don’t Skimp on the AM4 CPU Cooler

The 5950X and the 5800X3D both run warm. A basic stock cooler won’t cut it. Get a decent AM4 CPU cooler, a tower air cooler or a 240mm AIO, and keep an eye on what a normal CPU temp looks like under load. Most AM4 socket CPU cooler models also fit AM5, so the cooler can follow you if you upgrade later.

AM4 Compatible CPU List

The AM4 socket supports four generations of Ryzen desktop chips: Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000, and 5000. Every AM4 socket CPU fits every AM4 board physically. Whether it actually works depends on your motherboard chipset and BIOS.

Here’s the Ryzen AM4-compatible CPU list by chipset, at a glance:

X470, B450

X370, B350, A320

Update Your BIOS First

This trips up a lot of people. An older B450 board might not boot with a new 5000-series chip until you update the BIOS. Some boards have BIOS Flashback, which lets you update without a CPU installed. Check your board’s support page before you buy.

Think of that table as the AM4 socket CPU list in practice. So the AMD AM4 CPU list is long, but your board decides what actually runs. The AM4 CPU socket itself is the same across all of them. The firmware is what changes.

AM4 Motherboard CPU Combo Deals

If you’re building from scratch, an AM4 motherboard CPU combo can save real money. A B550 board plus a 5600 often costs less than a CPU alone on AM5. Add DDR4 and the gap gets even wider.

Should You Upgrade AM4 or Move to AM5?

If you already own an AM4 board, stay on AM4 and just swap the CPU. A 5800X3D drop-in is the cheapest big gaming boost you can get right now. If you’re building from scratch, it depends on your budget and on memory prices.

Memory is the big deal this year. In June 2026, a 32GB DDR5 kit cost roughly $375, while a 32GB DDR4 kit sold for around $199. That gap alone changes the math. I covered the differences in my DDR5 vs DDR4 comparison, and right now DDR4’s price makes AM4 really hard to ignore.

When AM5 Still Makes Sense

AM5 is the newer platform, and AMD has promised to support it for years. If you want an upgrade path for the next few CPU generations, AM5 wins. If you just want a strong gaming PC now, for less money, AM4 wins.

Upgrading From AM4 to AM5: Best CPU

If you do jump, upgrading from AM4 to AM5, the best CPU for gaming is an X3D chip again. The 7800X3D and 9800X3D are the obvious picks. You’ll need a new board and DDR5 too, so budget for all three. That’s a lot of extra money just for the platform.

There are plenty of other things nobody tells you when buying a gaming PC, and platform cost is right up there.

Will a Ryzen 5000 CPU work on a B450 motherboard?

Yes, but you’ll likely need a BIOS update first. Most B450 and X470 boards support Ryzen 5000 after the update.

Is AM4 still worth buying in 2026?

For budget and mid-range gaming builds, yes. DDR4 costs far less than DDR5 right now, and the 5800X3D is still a great gaming chip. If you want a long upgrade path, go AM5.

How much RAM should I pair with an AM4 CPU?

For gaming, 16GB is the minimum, and 32GB is the sweet spot. My guide on how much RAM you need for gaming goes deeper on this.

My Take

If I were building a desktop today, I’d go AM4 with a 5800X3D and call it done. For me, that’s the best CPU in AM4, no contest. That’s a bit funny to say about a ten-year-old socket. But the RAM situation is what it is, and a cheap DDR4 build just makes sense right now.

For tight budgets, a Ryzen 5 5600 is still great. For work, the 5950X. And honestly, anything older than Ryzen 5000, I’d skip. AMD clearly isn’t done with AM4 yet, either. If they’re willing to bring back the 5800X3D, I wouldn’t be shocked to see one more surprise before the socket finally retires.
