Mistral Releases Open Weights for Its Trillion-Parameter Mistral Large 4

Mistral has released the open weights for Mistral Large 4. The model has about one trillion parameters. Organizations can download it and run it on their own hardware. That matters because models this large usually sit behind hosted APIs. Using those APIs means sending your data to a third party. With open weights, companies can keep source code, security logs, and financial records inside their own systems. Mistral says it first offered the model in public preview earlier this month. Today’s full open-weight release follows that preview.

How the Model Works

Mistral calls the model a hybrid mixture-of-experts design. It accepts images as well as text. Only a fraction of its parameters work on any given token. This keeps inference costs lower than the full size suggests. Public listings for the Hugging Face repository point to about 52 billion active parameters. Mistral’s announcement does not state that number directly. Users pick one of three reasoning levels: Low, Medium, or High. High is the default. Heavier reasoning costs more but produces deeper answers.

Three Focus Areas

Mistral points the model at three areas. The first is coding, including agentic coding. Mistral says Large 4 leads open-weight models on certain benchmarks. The company also says it uses tokens more efficiently. The second is defensive cybersecurity. The model can find vulnerabilities, reproduce bugs, and suggest patches. Mistral says it refuses malicious requests at a high rate. The third is enterprise work. That includes finance, spreadsheets, and web browsing. The model supports more than 160 languages. Each area targets a different buyer. Coding tools appeal to developers. Security tools appeal to defense teams. Enterprise tools appeal to finance departments.

License Terms

The model uses the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, a modified MIT license. Companies can use the model commercially. They can also modify it and fine-tune it. There is one main restriction. Any business that offers the model as a hosted service needs a separate commercial agreement with Mistral. Startups building products on top of the model should read those terms first. They need to know the rules before they sell to customers. The license lets small teams start without a contract. Only companies that resell the model need to talk to Mistral first.

Where to Find It

Mistral puts the weights on Hugging Face. You can also reach the model through Mistral’s own studio and API. OpenRouter, NVIDIA-hosted endpoints, NIM containers, and Microsoft Foundry also carry it. Teams that want full control can host the model on their own servers. Smaller teams may prefer a hosted provider instead. For self-hosting, the open inference engines vLLM and SGLang work well. Mistral lists API pricing at $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens.

What It Means for Readers

Developers get a strong open option for coding assistants. Security teams that avoided sending code to hosted models now have something to test. They can run the model on their own workloads. Regulated enterprises can run it inside controlled environments. The release also strengthens the case for European open-model development. Mistral stresses that it trained the model in Europe. The company built it for sovereign deployments, where data stays under local control.

Mistral’s move also fits a broader pattern. Strong open models give developers more choice. Teams can move between hosts without rebuilding their applications. That choice puts pressure on prices across the industry. Readers who track the AI market should watch whether other labs respond with open releases of their own.

Keep expectations realistic. Open weights do not make a trillion-parameter model cheap to run at home. It still needs serious hardware, even with the efficiency of this design. The benchmark numbers come from Mistral. Independent testing will matter more. Over the coming weeks, watch how developers and security researchers test the model on real tasks.
