Free Steam Deck Games With Prime: Xbox, Luna and More
I’ll admit something. I’ve never actually claimed a free game through Prime. Not once. And I suspect plenty of Prime members are in the same boat, paying for shipping and shows while the games just sit there, unclaimed, month after month.
Which is a shame, because the free games are decent these days. Not every month, sure. But often enough that it’s worth a look.
The bigger problem is that Amazon keeps reshuffling everything. Prime Gaming became part of Luna. Luna moved into the Prime Video app in some countries. It’s confusing, honestly, even for people who follow this stuff. So here’s a plain rundown of what you actually get and how to play it on a Steam Deck, a PC or a TV.
What Prime Members Get Now
First, the name change. In October 2025, Amazon folded Prime Gaming into Amazon Luna. The perks still exist. They just live under the Luna brand now, which is why half the internet still calls it Prime Gaming and the other half calls it Luna.
As a Prime member, you get three main things:
- Free PC games to keep. Roughly 10 to 15 a month. You claim them, and they stay yours even if you cancel Prime later.
- Cloud games. A rotating library you can stream through Luna. These only work while you’re subscribed.
- In-game loot. Skins, items and bonuses for popular games, which change all the time.
The Twitch Perk People Forget
There’s a fourth perk, and honestly, it’s the one people forget most. Prime includes a free Twitch channel subscription every month. You can use it to support any streamer you like, at no extra cost. It also throws in a few emotes and a chat badge. Small stuff, sure. But if you watch Twitch at all, it’s basically free money for a creator you already enjoy.
How the Free Games Actually Work
Here’s the part that trips people up. The games with Prime don’t all come through Amazon’s own app. Most of them arrive as codes for other stores.
Take October 2026. The lineup of 10 free games includes the original DOOM and Vampire: The Masquerade, Swansong. Some redeem on the Epic Games Store, some on GOG, and only a couple through the Amazon Games app. None come as Steam keys.
And the claim windows close. If you’re hunting for an old lineup, like Prime Gaming June 2025, that window is long gone. Whatever you didn’t claim back then, you missed.
One more small thing. When a game comes as an Epic or GOG code, redeem it soon after claiming. Some codes carry their own redeem-by dates, separate from Amazon’s claim window. It’s easy to claim a game, forget the code, and lose it anyway.
Free Steam Deck Games With Prime
So, can you get free Steam Deck games through Prime? Yes, mostly. It just takes a bit of setup, because none of these games come through Steam itself.
The trick is an app called Heroic Games Launcher. It’s free, and it pulls in your Epic, GOG and Amazon libraries in one place. You install it from the Steam Deck’s desktop mode, sign in to each account, and download games from there.
Getting It Working
Here’s roughly how it goes for free games Amazon Prime Steam Deck owners claim:
- Claim the game first. Do this on Amazon’s site, then redeem any Epic or GOG codes on those stores.
- Sign in through Heroic. Link your Amazon, Epic and GOG accounts so everything shows up.
- Install and pick a Proton version. Proton is the layer that lets Windows games run on the Deck. The default usually works.
- Check ProtonDB if it misbehaves. It’s a community site that lists how well games run.
To be fair, it’s not always smooth. Proton wasn’t built for games outside Steam, so results vary. Most Amazon Prime free Steam Deck games run fine, but now and then one just won’t cooperate. That’s the trade-off for free.
If you’re on a gaming laptop instead, it’s simpler. You just install the launchers directly. A bit of tuning your gaming PC goes a long way with older titles, too.
Prime on Xbox and Fortnite
Prime on Xbox is a bit of a mixed bag. The free PC games don’t work on Xbox, full stop. They’re PC titles with PC codes.
What does work is Prime Video. The app runs on Xbox like on any streaming device, so your shows are covered. If it ever acts up there, it’s usually the same handful of causes I went through in my guide on what to do when Prime Video is down.
Some of the in-game loot can apply to games you play on Xbox, too. It depends on the game and on whether you link your accounts properly. Check each offer’s fine print before you claim it.
Prime and Fortnite
Prime Fortnite perks come up a lot. Fortnite has been part of Luna’s cloud library, which means Prime members could stream it without downloading anything.
Amazon has also run exclusive Fortnite cosmetics through Luna in the past. Back in 2023, for example, playing Fortnite on Luna unlocked a free pickaxe. These promos come and go, so I wouldn’t count on one being live at any given moment.
Amazon Luna Review: Worth It?
Here’s my honest Amazon Luna review, based on what’s out there. It’s convenient. It’s free with Prime. And it’s not a replacement for real hardware.
The idea is great. You stream games to a Fire TV, phone, browser or some smart TVs with no downloads and no updates. There’s also a Premium tier at $9.99 a month with a bigger library, and the full breakdown of Luna’s tiers is worth reading if you’re weighing it up.
Luna Inside Prime Video
The newest twist is Luna showing up inside the Prime Video app. Since July 2026, Prime members with a Fire TV in the US and UK can open a Games tab and play straight from there. Amazon says more devices and countries are coming, with no firm dates.
A Low Cost Gaming Console?
Can Luna work as a low-cost gaming console? Kind of. A Fire TV stick plus a controller costs far less than a PS5 or Xbox. For casual games, that’s a fair deal.
But reviews have flagged the weak spots: image quality that blurs in fast scenes, a smaller library than rivals, and a real dependence on your internet connection. If you play competitive shooters or care about sharp visuals, I’d save for actual hardware. Honestly.
Where Free Games With Prime Go Next
I think Amazon is slowly turning Prime Video into its gaming front door. Putting Luna inside the Prime Video app tells you that much. Expect more cloud games, more TVs, and more confusion about what’s called what.
My advice for now? Set a monthly reminder to check the free games. It takes two minutes. And if you lean on Luna, remember cloud gaming lives or dies on your connection, so a few tricks to reduce ping can make a bigger difference than you’d expect.
