Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 came out of nowhere. A debut game from a small French studio, priced at $49.99, and it ended up winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025. Nine awards in one night, actually, which is a record.

I haven’t played it myself yet. But I’ve watched a lot of gameplay, followed every update since launch, and honestly, it’s hard to ignore a game that sold over five million copies on word of mouth alone.

This guide answers the questions everyone has about E33: how long it takes to beat, whether it’s multiplayer, which edition to buy, what the map looks like, the AI controversy, and all the merch and vinyl. Let’s get into it.

What Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

E33 is a turn-based RPG from Sandfall Interactive, a studio based in Montpellier, France. Kepler Interactive published it on April 24, 2025.

The setup is grim, and that’s putting it mildly. Every year, a being called the Paintress wakes up and paints a number on a giant Monolith. Everyone of that age turns to dust in an event called the Gommage. This year, the number is 33. That’s the heart of the Expedition 33 lore, and it hits harder the more you learn.

So the people of Lumière, the last surviving city, send out Expedition 33. A group of 33-year-olds with one goal: reach the Paintress and stop her before she paints the next number. Past expeditions all failed. You can probably guess the mood.

Why Is It Called Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

“Clair-obscur” is French for chiaroscuro, the painting technique that plays light against dark. It fits the whole thing perfectly. The game is gorgeous and colorful, but the story underneath is heavy. Light and dark, all the way through. The Expedition 33 graphics lean into that contrast constantly.

The game’s art draws heavily on Belle Époque France too. That’s why Lumière looks like a broken, floating version of old Paris.

Is It Really French?

Yes. The studio is French, and you can play with French voices if you like. The Clair Obscur original language is French, but the English voice cast is excellent too, with Jennifer English, Ben Starr, Charlie Cox and Andy Serkis.

How Long Is Expedition 33?

Here’s the quick answer. The main story takes roughly 30 to 34 hours. The developers themselves said it was designed around 30 hours.

If you do a good chunk of side content, expect something closer to 50 hours. Completionists chasing every boss, outfit and secret can push well past that.

Honestly, that Expedition 33 game length is refreshing for an RPG. Long enough to feel epic, short enough that you’ll actually finish it.

How Many Acts Does Expedition 33 Have?

Three. Act 2 is generally the longest, and the clair obscur Expedition 33 Act 3 section is where a lot of the late-game optional content opens up. I won’t spoil anything, but the story takes some big turns between acts.

Is There New Game Plus?

Yes. Clair Obscur New Game Plus unlocks after you finish the story, so you can run it back with your builds and gear intact.

Is Expedition 33 Multiplayer?

No. Is Expedition 33 multiplayer? It’s a single-player game only. There’s no co-op and no online mode of any kind.

That surprises some people, because the party system looks like it could work with friends. It doesn’t. It’s a story-driven, solo RPG from start to finish.

Is Expedition 33 Open World?

Not really. Is Expedition 33 open world in the way Elden Ring or Skyrim are? No. It uses a world map you explore between levels, with mostly linear zones attached to it. Think classic Final Fantasy, not a modern sandbox.

Expedition 33 Combat: How It Works

This is the part that hooked me while watching. The Expedition 33 combat looks like a normal turn-based RPG at first. You pick attacks and skills, and characters act based on turn order.

But then the enemy attacks, and you don’t just sit there. You dodge, parry or jump in real time. Nail a parry and you counterattack. Miss it, and you take the full hit.

JRPG Influences in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

The JRPG influences in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 are obvious. People compare it to Final Fantasy and Persona all the time, and that’s fair. But that real-time parry layer gives it something those games don’t have.

Is Expedition 33 Hard?

It depends on the difficulty you pick. There are three settings: Story, Expeditioner and Expert. Story mode makes the timing very forgiving.

Is Expedition 33 hard on the default setting? From what I’ve seen, the parry timing is the main challenge. Some Expedition 33 enemies have attacks with deliberately awkward timing, and certain bosses can wreck you until you learn their patterns. Clair Obscur difficulty is less about stats and more about reflexes.

When Does Expedition 33 Get Good?

Pretty much right away, if you ask most players. The prologue in Lumière is one of the most talked-about openings in recent memory. That said, the combat depth really opens up once your builds start to come together.

Expedition 33 Platforms: PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2

The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It also launched on Game Pass, which helped a lot with its early popularity.

Is Expedition 33 on PS4 or Xbox One?

It does run on the PS5 Pro, and it looks great there.

Is Expedition 33 Coming to Switch 2?

Not officially. As of now, an Expedition 33 Switch 2 version is only a rumor. A well-known leaker has said a port is planned for 2026, but Sandfall and Nintendo haven’t confirmed anything. So the Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Switch 2 question is still open.

If you’re on PC, here’s what you need:

Expedition 33 Editions: Standard, Deluxe and Lumière

There are a few versions, and the naming is confusing. Here’s the breakdown.

• Standard Edition. The base game, at $49.99.
• Deluxe Edition. $59.99. Adds the Flowers outfit collection, Gommage outfit variants for each character, and the Clair and Obscur outfits for Maelle and Gustave.
• Lumière Edition. A physical PS5 edition is sold in some regions, with a steelbook, a 48-page art book and the Deluxe content.
• Collector’s Edition. Everything above plus a hand-painted Monolith music box.

Is the Clair Obscur Deluxe Edition Worth It?

Honestly? Only if you love cosmetics. The Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Deluxe Edition adds outfits, not story or gameplay. For most people, the standard version is all you need.

If you want a physical copy, the Lumière Edition is the best-value Clair Obscur physical copy on PS5, if you can find it. The Expedition 33 Lumière Edition was hard to find at launch, so check a few retailers.

Expedition 33 Price History

The game launched at $49.99, which was already cheap for a game this polished. Since then, it has dropped further in seasonal sales on Steam and console stores. If you’re patient, you can usually grab it for less.

The Expedition 33 Map

The Expedition 33 map is split into two layers. There’s the world map, which you walk across between areas, and then the individual zones themselves.

A full interactive map from fan sites is honestly worth having open on a second screen. The Clair Obscur Expedition 33 map hides a lot of optional bosses, hidden areas and collectibles that are easy to miss.

If you want to hunt everything down, search for an Expedition 33 interactive map from a fan site. They mark expedition journals, hidden bosses, merchants and more. The Expedition 33 full map is surprisingly big once you unlock ways to cross water and reach higher areas.

Expedition 33 Metacritic Score and Awards

Critics loved it. The Clair Obscur Metacritic score sits at 92, which made it one of the highest-rated games of 2025.

Then came The Game Awards. Expedition 33 won nine awards, the most in the show’s history. That included Game of the Year, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, and Best RPG. Jennifer English won Best Performance for Maelle.

It went into the show with 13 nominations, so the Clair Obscur Expedition 33 nominations alone were already a big deal.

The Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Generative AI Controversy

There’s one big asterisk. In December 2025, the Indie Game Awards pulled its Game of the Year and Debut Game awards from Expedition 33.

The reason was AI use. Sandfall had agreed when submitting that the game didn’t use generative AI. But players spotted what looked like AI-generated newspaper textures, and the studio confirmed AI had been used. Those textures were reportedly removed in a patch.

My Take on the AI Debate

I think the Indie Game Awards made a fair call. The rules said no generative AI, and Sandfall agreed to those rules. It doesn’t matter much that the textures were small or temporary.

Does it ruin the game? No. Clair Obscur Expedition 33 AI use was a small part of a huge project. But rules are rules. And honestly, it’s a useful reminder that “indie” award categories need clear lines on this stuff.

The game’s fanbase is massive now, and the merch reflects that.

The soundtrack by Lorien Testard is one of the most praised parts of the game. Laced Records released the official Clair Obscur vinyl in a few versions:

Expedition 33 Art Book

The Expedition 33 art book is coming from UDON Entertainment on November 24. It runs 352 pages and costs around $57 to $60. There’s also a collector’s version with art prints and a gold-plated medal.

Official Clair Obscur merchandise includes posters, apparel and figures. If you’re looking for a Clair Obscur Expedition 33 gift, the double vinyl or the art book are the safest picks. Both feel premium without costing a fortune.

Is There a Clair Obscur Movie?

Yes, one is in development. Story Kitchen and Sandfall are working on a live-action film adaptation. No director, cast or release date yet, so the Clair Obscur movie is still early.

Expedition 33 Trailer and What’s Next

The first Expedition 33 trailer debuted at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024, and the art style alone grabbed a lot of attention.

Since launch, Sandfall has added free updates, including a big one with a new area, new late-game bosses and new outfits. Director Guillaume Broche has also called it the start of a new franchise.
