Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Characters Guide
Half the reason people fall for Expedition 33 is the cast. A grieving engineer, a sarcastic teenage fencer, a giant blobby creature who loves to swim, and a mysterious stranger who seems to know far more than he should.
I haven’t played it yet, but I’ve watched a lot of gameplay. And honestly, the characters are what stuck with me most. Maelle especially. More on her below.
This guide covers all the major characters in Clair Obscur Expedition 33: who they are, who voices them, and which party members are worth building around. The top half is spoiler-free. The big story reveals are in a clearly marked section near the end, so you can stop reading before you hit them. If you want the basics on the game itself first, start with my Expedition 33 guide.
How Many Playable Characters Are in Expedition 33?
There are six Expedition 33 playable characters: Gustave, Maelle, Lune, Sciel, Monoco and Verso. You bring three into each fight, and you can swap in the others from reserve.
You don’t get all six at once, though. They join at different points in the story, and one of them won’t stay for the whole game. That’s all I’ll say up here.
So, how many party members in Expedition 33 can you use? Three active, six total. Simple enough.

Who Is Gustave in Expedition 33?
Gustave is an engineer from Lumière and the Clair Obscur Expedition 33 main character for the early story. He leads the expedition alongside Maelle and fights with a sword and a mechanical arm he charges up for big hits.
How Old Is Gustave in Expedition 33?
He’s in his early thirties. Members of Expedition 33 have just one year left to live before the Paintress’s number reaches them, which puts Gustave at around 32.
That detail matters. Every choice he makes carries the weight of a man who knows exactly how much time he has left. It’s a really smart way to frame a lead character, honestly.
Who Is Maelle in Expedition 33?
Maelle is a 16-year-old fencer and Gustave’s adoptive sister. She’s quiet, a bit prickly, and desperate to get out of Lumière.
She’s also my favorite character from everything I’ve watched. Here’s the thing: on paper, the moody teenager is a tired trope. But Maelle feels real. She’s sarcastic and closed-off one moment and then sincere the next, which is basically every teenager ever.
Jennifer English clearly agreed. She won Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025 for playing Maelle.
Is Maelle Good in Combat?
Yes. She switches between fencing stances, and with the right setup she hits harder than almost anyone in the game. Most tier lists rank her near the very top.
Who Are Sciel and Lune?
Sciel and Lune are the other two original Expeditioners, and they couldn’t be more different from each other.
Lune
Lune is a researcher obsessed with what happened to past expeditions. In combat, she’s the party’s mage, building up elemental “stains” that power her stronger spells. She’s serious, driven and sometimes a little cold.
Expedition 33 Sciel
Sciel is the calm one. She comes across as warm and easygoing, but there’s grief underneath. In fights, she builds up charges over a few turns and then unloads them in big bursts, plus she supports the rest of the party. The Expedition 33 Sciel fanbase is huge, and I get why. Shala Nyx gives her this relaxed, almost playful energy that makes every scene she’s in better.
Who Is Monoco?
Monoco is a Gestral, one of the strange wooden-masked creatures that live outside Lumière. Gestrals aren’t affected by the Gommage, so he doesn’t really need to be on this mission. He just loves a good fight.
His gimmick is fun. Monoco can learn moves from enemies and use them himself, which makes him one of the most flexible characters in the game. He’s also hilarious, honestly.
Who Is Verso in Expedition 33?
Verso is a mysterious stranger who shows up partway through the story. He’s charming, cocky, and clearly knows far more about the world than anyone else in the party.
The Expedition 33 Verso storyline is one of the biggest talking points in the whole game. Ben Starr, who also played Clive in Final Fantasy 16, voices him. I’ll keep his real story for the spoiler section.
What Is Esquie?
Esquie is a huge, round, friendly creature who becomes your ride across the world map. He talks like an excited kid and loves swimming.
Think of Clair Obscur Esquie as part mount, part mascot. As the story goes on, he gains new abilities, like swimming across water or breaking certain rocks, which open up new areas. He’s not a combat character, but people love him anyway.
So, what is Esquie, really? That’s another question the story answers later.
Who Is the Paintress in Expedition 33?
The Expedition 33 Paintress is the giant figure who paints a number on the Monolith every year. Everyone of that age disappears in the Gommage, which is the whole reason the expedition exists.
That’s the spoiler-free answer. Who is the Paintress in Expedition 33 behind all that? The game reveals it later, and I’ve covered it in the spoiler section below.
Who Is Renoir?
Clair Obscur Renoir is the main villain for much of the game, an older man who keeps getting in the expedition’s way and hits terrifyingly hard. Andy Serkis voices him, and he’s every bit as menacing as you’d expect.
The Renoir E33 story goes deeper than “evil old guy,” though. Like most things in this game, he’s not quite what he seems.
Who Is Clea in Expedition 33?
Clair Obscur Clea is one of the most important figures in the late game, and she’s tied closely to Renoir’s family. A painted version of Clea also appears as an optional late-game boss in the Flying Manor, which you can only reach in Act 3 once Esquie can fly.
That fight is tough. She heals herself constantly, and you have to parry her full attack combos to stop it. Clea Expedition 33 fans also get a unique outfit for beating her.
Who Are the Best Party Members in Expedition 33?
Maelle and Monoco are the strongest picks for most players, with Verso and Sciel close behind. Lune is great early on, and Gustave only matters in the first act.
Here’s how most tier lists rank the best party members in Expedition 33:
- Maelle. Top-tier damage, but fragile. You need to parry well.
- Monoco. The most flexible, thanks to all those learned enemy skills.
- Verso. A huge damage ceiling if you can keep up your parries.
- Sciel. Big burst damage plus party support, with a bit of setup.
- Lune. Strong early, but needs specific gear to scale late.
- Gustave. Good in Act 1, then out of the picture.
My pick would be Maelle, Monoco and Sciel. Big damage, flexibility, and support. It just looks like the most fun team to me.

Major spoilers from here. Stop reading if you haven’t finished the game.
Who Are the Dessendres?
The world of Expedition 33 is actually a painting, called the Canvas. The Dessendres are a real family of Painters outside it.
- Renoir is the father.
- Aline is the mother, and she is the Paintress.
- Verso is their son, who died in a fire.
- Clea is the eldest daughter, and she created the Nevrons.
- Alicia is the youngest, scarred in the same fire.
Who Is the Paintress, Really?
The Expedition 33 Aline reveal changes everything. She’s Aline Dessendre, a grieving mother hiding inside the Canvas her son Verso made. Her fight with Renoir inside the painting caused the Fracture.
Who Is Maelle, Really?
Maelle is Alicia Dessendre, reborn inside the Canvas without her memories. When those memories come back, she has to choose between this painted life and her painful real one. That’s a big part of why I like her so much. Her whole arc is about grief and wanting to stay somewhere that doesn’t hurt.
What Happens to Gustave?
Gustave dies at the end of Act 1, killed by Renoir. It’s one of the most shocking moments in the game, and Verso takes over as the main playable lead from there.
Who Is Verso, Really?
The Verso you play as is a painted copy of the real Verso, the Dessendre son who died. Aline painted him on the Canvas to keep a version of her son alive.
Why Does Gustave Look Like Verso?
There’s no official answer in the game. Sandfall clearly designed them to look alike, though, and fans have plenty of theories. The most popular one is that Gustave represents the life Verso might have had. It’s not confirmed. But it’s a nice idea.
How Does It End?
There are two endings, and neither is truly happy. Verso can destroy the Canvas, or Maelle can save it and stay inside. If you want the full breakdown, there’s a good Expedition 33 ending explained piece that goes through both.
Final Thoughts
The characters are why Expedition 33 works. The combat is great, the art is gorgeous, but it’s Maelle, Gustave, Verso and even goofy Esquie that people keep talking about months later.
With a live-action movie in development, I’m curious who gets cast as Maelle. That’s going to be a tough role to fill after Jennifer English. And if this cast won you over, my list of the best RPG games has plenty more stories worth getting attached to.
