RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti: Which to Buy?
AMD vs Nvidia. Every GPU generation brings the same argument back, and this one is no different.
On one side, the RX 9070 XT: 16GB of VRAM, great raster performance, and a launch price that embarrassed Nvidia’s mid-range. On the other, the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti, with DLSS, better ray tracing and Nvidia’s ecosystem behind them.
So which one should you actually buy? Honestly, it depends on what you play. I know that sounds like a cop-out. It isn’t, and I’ll explain why below.
I’ll compare the 9070 XT against the RTX 5070, the RTX 5070 Ti, the RTX 5080, AMD’s own RX 9070, and the older RX 7900 XTX. If you want the full rundown of the card itself first, my RX 9070 XT guide covers specs, power draw and the best models.

The prices in that second row are the real story. Memory shortages pushed every card up this year, but Nvidia’s 5070 Ti got hit hardest.
RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070
This is the easiest comparison of the lot. The RX 9070 XT wins.
In a 52-game test from September 2026, the 9070 XT averaged about 24% faster at 1440p and 25% faster at 4K than the RTX 5070. It also had much better 1% lows, which is what you actually feel as smoothness.
Where the RTX 5070 Still Wins
Sure, Nvidia still has wins. In heavy path-traced games like Doom: The Dark Ages, the RTX 5070 can pull ahead by 30% or more. It also draws less power, around 250W versus 304W.
But here’s the thing. The 5070 only has 12GB of VRAM. That’s already tight for 1440p with high textures in some newer games, and it’ll only get tighter.
Is the RTX 5070 vs RX 9070 XT Price Gap Worth It?
At launch, the RTX 5070 was $50 cheaper. Today the two cost roughly the same, and in some stores the Nvidia card costs more. One analysis put the RTX 5070 at a 37% cost-per-frame premium at 1440p.
So in the RTX 5070 vs RX 9070 XT matchup, unless you mostly play path-traced showcase games, I’d take the AMD card. Faster, more VRAM, similar money.
RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070 Ti
This one is much closer. Practically a tie in raster.
Across 52 games, the RTX 5070 Ti came out only about 1.4% faster at 1440p and about 4% faster at 4K. You won’t notice that difference without a frame counter on screen. Honestly, you’d struggle even with one.
Both cards have 16GB of VRAM. Both draw around 300W on paper, though the 9070 XT pulls roughly 20% more power in actual gaming.
Ray Tracing Is Where the 5070 Ti Pulls Away
Turn on heavy ray tracing or path tracing, and the RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070 Ti race stops being close. In Doom with path tracing at 1440p, the 5070 Ti ran about 63% faster.
In lighter ray-traced games, though, the 9070 XT holds its own. It tied or beat the 5070 Ti in titles like Monster Hunter Wilds.
The Price Problem
The RTX 5070 Ti vs RX 9070 XT gap used to be $150 at launch. Now the 5070 Ti costs well over $1,100, while the 9070 XT sits around $750 to $800.
That’s a $300-plus premium for near-identical raster performance. For most people, that’s very hard to justify. For ray tracing enthusiasts, maybe not. Most RX 9070 XT vs 5070 Ti debates end exactly there: ray tracing on one side, price on the other.
What Is the Nvidia Equivalent to the RX 9070 XT?
If you’re wondering what the Nvidia equivalent to the RX 9070 XT performance is, it’s the RTX 5070 Ti. In raster, they’re basically the same card.
Within AMD’s own range, the closest RX 9070 XT equivalent from the last generation sits somewhere between the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX. The RTX 5070 is a tier below. So the RX 9070 XT Nvidia equivalent depends on what you mean: performance says 5070 Ti, but launch pricing puts it against the 5070.
RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5080
The RTX 5080 is faster. No debate there. In most games it leads by roughly 15% to 20%, and it pulls further ahead with ray tracing on.
But at around $1,500 right now, it costs nearly twice as much as the 9070 XT. In the RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5080 comparison, you’re paying double for maybe a fifth more performance.
Some games buck the trend too. At launch, the 9070 XT even beat the 5080 in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
My take: the 5080 only makes sense if you’re gaming at 4K with ray tracing and money isn’t the main concern.
What About the RTX 5090?
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5090 comparison isn’t really a fair fight. The 5090 is Nvidia’s flagship, much faster at 4K, and costs several times as much. They’re not competing for the same buyer.
RX 9070 vs 9070 XT: AMD’s Own Matchup
A lot of people compare 9070 vs 9070 XT before they even look at Nvidia. Fair enough.
The XT has 64 compute units against the 9070’s 56 and higher clock speeds. In practice, the XT is roughly 10% to 16% faster, with the biggest gaps at 4K.
Which One Makes More Sense?
In the 9070 XT vs 9070 debate, power is the other big difference. The non-XT card draws just 220W compared to 304W on the XT. That makes it one of the most efficient cards around. It also works with a smaller 650W power supply.
So, 9070 or 9070 XT? At launch, the gap was only $50, and the XT was the obvious pick. Today, check both prices. If the plain 9070 is $100 or cheaper, it’s a great 1440p card.
RX 7900 XTX vs RX 9070 XT
The 7900 XTX is AMD’s last-gen flagship, so this is an interesting one.
In pure raster, the RX 7900 XTX is still a bit faster in many games, usually by 5% to 10%, and it has 24GB of VRAM. But the RX 9070 XT wins on ray tracing in newer titles, uses less power, and supports FSR 4 and Redstone properly.
If you already own a 7900 XTX, don’t “upgrade” to a 9070 XT. It’s a sidegrade at best. If you’re buying new, the 9070 XT makes more sense. Looking at the RX 9070 XT vs 7900 XTX from a new buyer’s side, the newer card is simply the safer long-term pick.
RX 7900 XT vs RX 9070 XT
The 7900 XT is a different story. In this RX 7900 XT vs RX 9070 XT matchup, the newer card is usually 10% to 15% faster, with a big lead in ray tracing. Unless you find a used 7900 XT at a bargain price, go with the 9070 XT.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT vs PS5
This one gets asked a lot, and it’s a fair question if you’re choosing between a console and a PC.
The RX 9070 XT is far more powerful than the PS5’s graphics chip, several times over in raw performance. It’s also comfortably faster than the PS5 Pro. You’ll get higher frame rates, higher resolutions and better ray tracing.
But the GPU alone costs more than a PS5. Add a CPU, motherboard, RAM, and the rest, and you’re looking at a much bigger budget. If you’re weighing that up, my guide on what nobody tells you when buying a gaming PC covers the hidden costs.
AMD 9070 XT Compared to Nvidia: Features
Raw frame rates aren’t everything. The software side matters too.
- Upscaling. DLSS is still the more mature option, and Nvidia announced DLSS 5 for RTX 50 cards this year. FSR Redstone has closed the gap a lot, but game support is smaller.
- Frame generation. Nvidia’s multi-frame generation gives RTX 50 cards a big boost in supported games. AMD’s frame generation works well, but fewer games support it.
- VRAM. AMD wins at this price. 16GB on the 9070 XT versus 12GB on the RTX 5070.
- Power. Nvidia is more efficient. The 9070 XT runs hotter and hungrier.
So, Which Should You Buy?
It depends on how you play. Here’s how I’d decide:
- You play mostly raster games at 1440p. Get the RX 9070 XT. It matches the 5070 Ti and beats the 5070 for less money.
- You love ray tracing and path tracing. The RTX 5070 Ti is the better card if you can stomach the price.
- You’re on a tight budget. Look at the plain RX 9070 or a discounted RTX 5070.
- You want DLSS above everything. Stick with Nvidia.

Should You Buy Now or Wait?
Same advice as my guide. If you can wait, wait.
Every one of these cards costs well above the launch price right now. The 9070 XT is around $200 over, and the 5070 Ti is closer to $350 over. You’re paying a shortage tax, not getting extra performance for it.
If your current GPU still works, hold on and watch prices. If you need a card now, the 9070 XT still gives you the most performance per dollar in this group. And when prices finally come down, this comparison is going to look a lot more lopsided than it does today.
