Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Map, Quests and Review Guide

By Technwz Editorial Team
October 10, 2026 11 Min Read

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey came out back in 2018. And somehow, in 2026, people are flooding back into it.

Blame Christopher Nolan. His film The Odyssey hit cinemas on July 17, and daily players across Steam, Xbox and PlayStation jumped about 90% in ten days, from roughly 122,000 to 233,000. Not bad for a seven-year-old game.

I played through the whole thing as Alexios, the main story plus both DLC expansions, and it’s still one of my favorite games ever. So this isn’t a reviewer’s quick take after twenty hours. It’s the guide I wish I’d had, covering the map, the side quests people keep getting stuck on, the riddles, the romance options, and whether it’s actually worth your time now.

Is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Good in 2026?

Short answer: yes. For me, it’s one of the best games I’ve played, period. The mythical creatures, the huge Greek map, the graphics, and a story that actually kept me invested. Is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey good enough to start fresh in 2026, seven years after launch? That’s the real question, and my answer is a confident yes.

Here’s the thing. Odyssey is less an Assassin’s Creed game and more a giant open-world RPG wearing the series’ hood. You pick dialogue, you make choices, and you build a character with skill trees and gear sets. Stealth is there, sure. But you’ll spend more time fighting mercenaries than sneaking past guards. If you’ve played something like Cyberpunk, with its choices and skill trees, my Cyberpunk 2077 beginner’s guide shows how similar the two structures are.

Critics liked it back then. It holds a Top Critic Average of 83 on OpenCritic, which lines up with what most Assassin’s Creed Odyssey reviews said at launch: huge, gorgeous, and a bit much.

Yes, it’s big. But the story is what carries all that size. Kassandra and Alexios’s family drama, the Cult of Kosmos mystery, and the twists with your parents. I kept playing because I genuinely wanted to know what happened next, not just to tick boxes.

Still, I finished it. And then I went straight into the DLC. That should tell you something.

If you’re on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, good news: an August 2021 update added 60fps support through backwards compatibility. It plays far smoother than it did on PS4.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Map

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey map is massive. It covers about 130 square kilometers, which made it 62% bigger than Origins at launch.

A lot of that is sea, though. So the land you actually walk on isn’t as overwhelming as the number suggests. You’ll sail between islands constantly, and the ship becomes your second home pretty fast.

Exploring Greece was hands down my favorite part of the game. It still looks stunning today, and I’d put the lighting and the water up against plenty of newer releases. Climbing a statue in Athens at sunset, then sailing out to some tiny island with three goats and a hidden tomb on it. That’s the stuff that made Odyssey special for me.

Regions Worth Knowing

The map splits into dozens of regions, each with its own level range. A few that matter early:

  • Kephallonia. Your starting island. Ithaca and Odysseus’s palace sit nearby, which ties into Odessa’s quests.
  • Phokis. Delphi, the Oracle, and a pile of Ainigmata Ostraka riddles.
  • Attica. Athens itself. Big, busy, and where a lot of the main story happens.
  • Argolis. Home of Mycenae and Agamemnon’s Tomb.
  • Arkadia. Forests, the Daughters of Artemis, and the Armored Bird landmark.

Regions also flip between Athenian and Spartan control. Weaken a region’s leader and you can trigger a conquest battle, which is chaotic and fun the first few times. Less so the twentieth.

How Long Is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey?

How long is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey if you mostly stick to the story? Roughly 36 to 40 hours. That’s a rare case where the main path alone is longer than most full games.

But nobody plays it that way. Not really. The level gating pushes you into side quests whether you want them or not. Most players land somewhere around 50 hours at minimum once side content comes in, and completionists can push well past 100.

How long is AC Odyssey with both DLCs on top? Add another 30-ish hours. Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis are both full-sized expansions, not quick add-ons.

I honestly lost track of my hours. And I didn’t mind one bit. When the story is this good, the length feels like more of a good thing, not a chore.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Walkthrough: Key Story Moments

I’m not going to do a full quest-by-quest Assassin’s Creed Odyssey walkthrough here. A complete AC Odyssey walkthrough would honestly run longer than the game itself. Instead, here are the story beats where players get stuck or confused most often.

Kill Kleon or Help Brasidas?

This one comes up constantly. During Chapter 8, the Battle of Amphipolis pits Sparta’s Brasidas against the Athenian demagogue Kleon.

Here’s the twist. It’s not really a choice between them. You help Brasidas in the fight no matter what. Deimos kills him in a cutscene anyway. Then you chase Kleon down on the shoreline and finish him off.

The only real decision is how Kleon dies, slow or quick. Your reward is the Bow of Paris, a cultist clue, and an artifact fragment. So don’t stress over it. The outcome is locked.

Alkibiades in AC Odyssey

Alkibiades in AC Odyssey is one of the most memorable characters in Athens. You meet him at Perikles’ house during the main story. He’s charming, shameless, and openly flirts with everybody.

He’s also a romance option, through a quest called “Oil and Love.” It involves oil. And a goat. I’ll leave it there.

The Order of the Ancients

The order of the ancients shows up in the Legacy of the First Blade DLC. They’re basically the early version of the Templars, and they hunt you across the expansion. If you’ve played Origins or Valhalla, you’ll recognize the name right away. It’s a neat link between the games.

Side Quests People Get Stuck On

Some side content in Odyssey is genuinely great. Some of it you’ll only remember because you had to look it up. Here are the ones players search for most.

How to Kill Obelia

Obelia runs a stall in Poiessa village on Keos. She hires you for “We’re Treasure Hunters,” a dive into the Submerged Minoan Palace for a sunken artifact.

Once you surface, she shows up on a pirate bireme and wants the artifact. Refuse and demand payment. That opens the optional “Kill Obelia” objective.

My tip: bring your own ship alongside hers instead of swimming over. Weaken her bireme with your fire arrows and javelins, then board it. Fighting her crew on deck is a lot easier than treading water.

Agamemnon’s Tomb

Agamemnon’s Tomb sits in Argolis, just southwest of the ancient city of Mycenae. An underground passage connects it to the ruins.

Like most tombs in the game, it hides an Ancient Stele, which gives you ability points. It also matters later in The Fate of Atlantis storyline, since one of the symbols for the Atlantis seal comes from the Agamemnon tomb.

Bring a torch. Seriously, turn it on. These tombs get dark fast.

Where Is the Armored Bird in Arkadia?

The Stymphalos Armored Bird is a landmark in the Golden Fields of Arkadia, right above the village of Stymphalos. It’s a giant tree shaped like a bird and covered in armor plating, a nod to the Stymphalian birds Herakles fought in the myths.

One of Artaxerxes’ quests sends you there to dig up an old scroll from Themistokles. Use Ikaros to scan the area if you can’t spot the dig site.

A Life’s Worth

A Life’s Worth in AC Odyssey is a side quest in Attica, and it’s darker than most. A slave asks for help. His master, a cultist, will free him only if you kill Odessa.

You can refuse, which seals the slave’s fate. If Odessa is already on your crew, refusing is your only option. Either way, you’ll need to deal with the master afterward.

Ainigmata Ostraka Riddles

Ainigmata Ostraka are clay tablets with riddles written on them. Each ostraka points to a hidden spot somewhere in the same region. Solve it and you unlock a new engraving for upgrading your gear.

The trick is that the riddle only gives you clues. No waypoint. You have to read the landmarks yourself, which I actually liked. It’s one of the few things in Odyssey that makes you look at the world instead of the map.

To find Ainigmata Ostraka, look for the scroll icon on your map in each region. Then synchronize with nearby viewpoints so Ikaros can mark the tablet.

A Finger Tip

The A Finger Tip riddle in AC Odyssey starts in Phokis, at Desphina Fort northwest of the Hill of the Sacred War.

The “giant half-buried” is the Tityos statue in the Valley of the Snake. Follow its finger north to Grand Mount Parnassos. Climb the east side and look for a bed of wooden planks at an old campsite.

Pressed for Time

Pressed for Time is another Phokis riddle. The tablet sits at the campsite by “Prometheus and the Birth of Humankind,” northeast of Pilgrim’s Landing.

The solution is near the Leader House on the eastern side of Pilgrim’s Landing. Skip the house itself. Walk around to the olive farm next to it and check the large bowl of olives.

Korfu Island Riddles

Korfu is a small island in the northwest, and it packs five riddles. One of them, “The Champion,” unlocks a wild engraving: +100% damage, but -100% resistances. Glass cannon builds love it.

If you’re hunting engravings, Korfu Island in AC Odyssey is one of the best stops on the map for its size.

Romance Options in Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey romance options work the same whether you play Kassandra or Alexios. That’s something I appreciated, honestly. No locked doors based on your character.

Some of the main AC Odyssey romance options:

  • Odessa. A descendant of Odysseus, found caged east of his palace. Her quest chain ends with “A True Story.”
  • Alkibiades. Athens, through “Oil and Love.”
  • Kyra and Thelatos. Mykonos, during the main quest. Siding with Thelatos keeps both open.
  • Roxana. Hydrea, through a series of sparring and racing challenges.
  • Daphnae. Leader of the Daughters of Artemis in Phokis.

Odessa in AC Odyssey is probably my favorite of the bunch. She’s sharp, a bit sarcastic, and her story ties into the wider Odysseus myth in a way that suits the Nolan crowd showing up right now.

One warning. Legacy of the First Blade gives your character a child, Elpidios, regardless of who you romanced before. That annoyed a lot of players at launch, and Ubisoft later apologized for how it handled it.

Mythical Creatures and Legendary Beasts

This is the part nobody warns you about properly. Odyssey isn’t just soldiers and mercenaries. Late in the game, you get to fight actual monsters from Greek myth.

  • Medusa. Hidden on Lesbos, and she turns your surroundings to stone mid-fight.
  • The Minotaur. Waiting in a labyrinth on Crete, exactly where the myth says.
  • The Cyclops. Steropes, on Kythera. Huge, angry, and throws boulders at you.
  • The Sphinx. Asks you riddles before it decides whether to fight.

Each one guards an artifact tied to the Atlantis storyline. And honestly, these fights were the highlight of the whole game for me. Coming face to face with Medusa after hours of fighting regular soldiers? That’s a moment I still remember clearly.

Legendary Animals: The Daughters of Artemis Hunt

Before the big monsters, there’s a whole hunting side quest that I’d honestly call one of the best in the game. It starts with Daphnae, leader of the Daughters of Artemis, near the Temple of Artemis in northern Phokis.

She sends you after eight legendary animals, each one pulled straight from Greek myth:

Legendary Animal

Region

Suggested Level

Kalydonian Boar

Phokis

13

Hind of Keryneia

Euboea

16

Nemean Lion

Argolis

22

Kretan Bull

Messara

33

Lykaon Wolf

Lakonia

36

Kallisto the Bear

Arkadia

37

Erymanthian Boar

Elis

38

Krokottas Hyena

Kythera

39

Most hunts drop a piece of the Master Artemis gear set, which boosts all Hunter abilities by 15% once you finish it. If you lean on your bow at all, this set is worth the effort.

These aren’t regular animals with a bigger health bar either. The Nemean Lion hits like a truck. Kallisto spawns smaller bears to swarm you. Come under-leveled and you’ll know about it fast.

Finish the hunts and the questline also opens Daphnae as a romance option, which is a nice bonus.

Mercenaries and the Cult of Kosmos

This was the other half of what kept me hooked. The mercenary system is like a mini Nemesis system. Do enough crimes and bounty hunters start chasing you across Greece.

Then there’s the Cult of Kosmos. Dozens of cultists, all hidden behind clues, each one connected to a bigger web. Unmasking them one by one felt like detective work, and taking down the last few leaders was easily some of the most satisfying stuff in the game.

If you enjoy that “hunt a list of targets” structure, I’d put Odyssey close to the top of my best RPG games picks.

Season Pass and Ultimate Edition

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey season pass includes:

  • Legacy of the First Blade. Three episodes, featuring Darius, the first Hidden Blade user.
  • The Fate of Atlantis. Three episodes set in Elysium, the Underworld and Atlantis.
  • Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered. Free with the pass, oddly enough.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Ultimate Edition bundles the base game, the season pass, and all the Deluxe extras like gear packs and XP boosts. It usually goes on sale for a fraction of its original price. Wait for a discount. It always comes.

For what it’s worth, both DLCs are excellent. Fate of Atlantis especially. It’s basically a mythology theme park, and I mean that as a compliment.

Cheats and Codes

There are no official Assassin’s Creed Odyssey cheats. No button combos, no console commands.

On PC, some players use Cheat Engine tables for infinite drachmae or XP. That works only on PC, and it can break saves, so back up first. Console players have no workaround.

If you’ve seen Assassin’s Creed Odyssey codes online, they’re almost always store keys for the game or DLC, not cheats. Stick to official stores. A cheap Assassin’s Creed Odyssey code from a sketchy reseller isn’t worth the risk to your account.

On PC, the game still looks great, but it’s demanding in big cities like Athens. My gaming PC optimization guide covers a few settings that help.

Assassin’s Creed Origins vs Odyssey

This is the debate that never ends. Assassin’s Creed Origins vs Odyssey basically comes down to what you want.

Origins has the tighter story. Bayek’s revenge plot hits hard, and the game is shorter and more focused.

Odyssey has the bigger world, better combat, dialogue choices, mythical bosses, and way more freedom. Its family story held me just as well, to be fair.

My pick? Odyssey, and not by a small margin. The exploration, the monsters and the cult hunt just stuck with me more. But if you’ve never played either and want something shorter first, Origins is a solid warm-up.

Final Thoughts

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a big game with a big heart. Calling it an “Assassin’s Creed” game takes some imagination, sure. But the story, the world and the monsters more than make up for that.

But Greece in this game is something else. Between the mythical creatures, the map and the graphics, it’s still one of my all-time favorites, and I’d rather sail it than most open worlds released since. And with Nolan’s film pulling a whole new crowd into Greek myths, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ubisoft finally gives it a proper current-gen release. Honestly? It deserves one.

If you’re fresh off the movie and wondering if this is worth a shot, it is. Take your time with it.
