GTA 5 Story Mode Guide: Money, Cars, Characters, Military Base & More

GTA 5 came out in 2013. It’s now 2026. And people are still playing it. Still searching for it. I’m still figuring stuff out.

That’s not surprising, really. The story mode is genuinely one of the best in gaming. The game features three entirely different protagonists, a massive open world, more side content than most games have in total, and a stock market manipulation mechanic that allows you to become a billionaire if you play it right.

This guide covers everything. How to make money in GTA 5 story mode, how to sell cars and property, how to switch characters, where the military base is, the fastest cars, crossplay, and a bunch of other things that people constantly search for.

How to Make Money in GTA 5 Story Mode

Money in story mode works differently from GTA Online. You can’t grind the same missions repeatedly for infinite cash. The story has a natural money flow, and there are smart ways to maximize it if you know what you’re doing.

The Stock Market: The Biggest Money Maker by Far

This method is how you make tens of millions, potentially hundreds of millions, in GTA 5 story mode. It involves Lester’s assassination missions.

Lester gives you five assassination missions during the story. Before each one, invest your characters’ money in specific stocks that will spike after you complete the mission. Then sell after the mission is done.

Here’s the breakdown:

Hotel Assassination (mandatory, first Lester mission): Before: Buy BettaPharmaceuticals (BAWSAQ) After: Sell when it peaks, usually around 50% gain

The Multi-Target Assassination: Before: Buy Debonaire Cigarettes (LCN). After: Sell at around 80% gain, then switch to Redwood Cigarettes

The Vice Assassination: Before: Buy Fruit Computers (BAWSAQ). After: Sell at around 50% gain

The Bus Assassination: Before: Sell any Vapid stock you have if possible. After: Buy Vapid after the mission

The Construction Assassination: Before: Buy Gold Coast Development (LCN). After: Sell at around 80% gain

The trick is to wait until near the end of the story before doing any assassination mission except the first one (which is required). By then, all three characters have accumulated significant cash from story missions and heists. The more money you invest, the bigger the return.

If you do all five missions this way with maximum money invested, all three characters can end up as billionaires.

Heists

The main story heists are the primary source of story mode income. Each one pays a significant amount, and the final heist, The Big Score, is the largest payday in the game.

For The Big Score specifically, the subtle approach pays more than the obvious approach. Choose the subtle approach and pick the right crew to maximize your take.

Robbing Stores

Early game, robbing convenience stores is a quick way to get cash. Walk in, aim a weapon at the cashier, and wait for them to empty the register. The payout is small, around $500 to $1,000 per store, but it adds up early when you need cash for weapons and upgrades.

Shoot the second register too if there is one. Some stores have it behind the counter. That doubles your take.

Security Vans

Security vans appear randomly on the map as random events. Stopping and breaking into one pays around $8,000 to $9,000. They’re marked on the map when they appear.

The easiest method: shoot the back doors directly rather than trying to blow them open. It’s faster and initially draws less unwanted level attention.

How to Earn Cash Fast in GTA 5 Online

If you’re playing GTA Online rather than story mode, the money methods are different. The Cayo Perico heist is the most efficient solo money grinder in 2026, paying around $1.5 million per run with a roughly 30-minute completion time for experienced players.

The Acid Lab business introduced in the Last Dose missions is also excellent passive income, generating around $250,000 to $340,000 per resupply cycle depending on upgrades.

How to Sell Cars in GTA 5

This is something that confuses a lot of people. You can’t sell cars in GTA 5 story mode directly. There’s no official car-selling mechanic in the single-player campaign.

What you can do is mod and use cars freely. Story mode gives you essentially unlimited access to cars throughout the world. Just find what you want and take it.

How to Sell Cars in GTA 5 Online

GTA Online does let you sell cars, but with restrictions:

  1. Find or steal a car
  2. Drive it to Los Santos Customs (the garage icon on the map)
  3. Select “Sell” from the menu
  4. You’ll get a cash payout based on the car’s value

The payout is roughly 10% of the car’s in-game value. High-end sports cars and supercars pay the most.

Important restrictions:

  • You can only sell one personal vehicle every 48 real-world minutes
  • Personal vehicles you bought can be sold but at a significant loss
  • Some cars can’t be sold at all, including ones stolen from other players

Selling cars online is decent early-game cash but becomes less relevant once you unlock heists and businesses.

How to Sell Property in GTA 5

In story mode, you cannot sell properties once you buy them. Properties in story mode are investments that generate passive income over time. Once purchased, they’re permanent.

The best properties to buy in story mode for income:

  • Sonar Collections Dock
  • Towing Impound
  • Los Santos Customs garages
  • Cinema Doppler

None of these are worth buying early. Save your money for weapons and story progression first.

How to Sell Property in GTA 5 Online

In GTA Online, selling properties is more straightforward. Open the interaction menu, go to the relevant property type, and there’s usually a sell option. However, you’ll typically get around 50% of the purchase price back, so it’s not a great return.

For businesses specifically, selling stock (rather than the business itself) is how you make money. Nightclubs, bunkers, and MC businesses all accumulate stock over time, which you can then sell for profit.

How to Switch Characters in GTA 5

This is one of GTA 5’s most unique mechanics. You can switch between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor at almost any time during free roam.

On PC: Hold Alt and use the mouse wheel to select a character from the radial menu that appears. Click to confirm.

On PlayStation: Hold down on the D-pad. A radial menu appears showing all three characters. Move the right stick to select who you want.

On Xbox: Hold the down button on the D-pad. The same radial menu appears.

When you switch, the camera zooms out to a satellite view and then zooms back in on the new character, wherever they are in the world. Each character has their own location, routine, and sometimes things happen to them off-screen while you’re playing as someone else.

A few things to know about switching:

You can’t switch during missions. The game locks you into the current character until the mission ends or prompts a switch.

Trevor becomes available later in the story. For the first portion of the game, you only have Michael and Franklin. Trevor joins after a specific story mission.

Each character has a unique special ability. Michael slows down time in firefights. Franklin slows down time while driving. Trevor goes into a rage mode that reduces damage taken and increases damage dealt.

Where Is the Military Base in GTA 5?

The military base in GTA 5 is Fort Zancudo. It’s located in Blaine County, on the western side of the map, just north of the Lago Zancudo swamplands.

You’ll see it clearly on the map. It’s a large restricted area with a runway, hangars, and military vehicles, including jets, tanks, and helicopters.

Getting In: Fort Zancudo is guarded. Drive in uninvited and you’ll immediately get a 3-star wanted level. Walk in from outside the fence line, and the jets will scramble for you.

The fastest legit way in the early game is to find the main gate and just drive through at high speed. You’ll get to the wanted level, but you can grab a fighter jet and fly out.

What’s Worth Getting There: The P-996 Lazer fighter jet is parked on the runway and is the best aircraft in the game for combat. It’s worth the chaos of getting in to steal one.

The Rhino tank is also inside Fort Zancudo. It is incredibly useful for missions where you need serious firepower.

Once you have the wanted level cleared, stolen military vehicles are yours to keep as long as you don’t get busted or wasted while holding them.

What Is the Fastest Car in GTA 5?

The fastest cars in GTA 5 differ between story mode and GTA Online because Online has received significantly more vehicles over the years.

Fastest Cars in GTA 5 Story Mode

In vanilla story mode, the top-speed cars are:

  1. Pfister 811 — top speed around 132 mph
  2. Vapid FMJ — just behind the 811
  3. Grotti Itali GTB Custom — excellent acceleration and top speed combo
  4. Pegassi Zentorno — classic high-end supercar
  5. Dewbauchee Vagner — very competitive in the supercar class

Fastest Cars in GTA 5 Online (2026)

Over the years, the developers have added many more vehicles to GTA Online. The current fastest cars include:

  1. Pfister Astron Custom — top of the supercar class
  2. Vapid Dominator GTX — muscle car class leader
  3. Ocelot Pariah — consistently fast and easy to handle

The Pariah is worth mentioning specifically because it has one of the highest top speeds in the game and is relatively affordable compared to the newer supercars. It’s a classic recommendation for a reason.

Is GTA 5 cross-play?

This inquiry is one of the most searched GTA 5 questions in 2026, and the answer is no, GTA 5 is not cross-play.

GTA Online does not support cross-platform play. PS5 players can only play with other PS5 players. Xbox Series X players can only play with other Xbox players. PC players can only play with other PC players.

There’s no cross-save either. Your GTA Online character and progress are locked to the platform you created them on.

This is a long-standing frustration in the GTA community. With GTA 6 on the horizon, there’s hope that Rockstar will implement crossplay in the next game, but GTA 5 Online has never had it and isn’t getting it now. If you’re curious about what GTA 6 is bringing, refer to our GTA 6 PC release date and requirements guide.

How Many Missions Are in GTA 5?

GTA 5 story mode has 69 main story missions. That number is fixed regardless of platform or version. If you want a full walkthrough of every mission, GTA5Wiki covers each one in detail.

On top of the main missions:

  • 58 Strangers and Freaks side missions
  • 14 Random Events
  • Various Hobbies and Pastimes activities

For 100% completion, you need to complete 69 story missions, a majority of the Strangers and Freaks missions, and various other activities, including racing, sports, and property purchases.

How long is GTA 5 story mode? The main story takes around 30 to 35 hours to complete. For 100% completion, including all side content, most players spend 80 to 100 hours. Speedrunners have completed the main story in under 7 hours, but that requires skipping essentially everything.

How Old Is Franklin in GTA 5?

Franklin Clinton is 25 years old in GTA 5. The game is set in 2013, and Franklin was born in 1988.

He’s the youngest of the three protagonists. Michael is in his mid-40s, and Trevor is in his early 40s.

Franklin’s youth is a core part of his character. He’s ambitious, hungry, and trying to get out of a life he didn’t choose. Michael sees his younger self in Franklin, which partly explains their developing relationship throughout the story.

Are Franklin, Lamar, and Michael connected?

Yes, the three main characters are all connected, though their connections develop over the course of the story. The GTA Wiki has detailed pages on each character if you want to dig into their backstories.

Franklin and Lamar are childhood friends from the Chamberlain Hills area of South Los Santos. They work together as repo men for a car dealership at the start of the game.

Franklin meets Michael through a repossession job that goes wrong, which kicks off the main story. Michael becomes a mentor figure for Franklin.

Trevor and Michael have a history that goes back to their days as bank robbers before the events of the game. Their reunion is one of the more dramatic moments in the story.

Lamar is Franklin’s best friend and appears throughout the game, including in a mission added in later updates that brought him and Franklin back together post-story. He’s become one of the most beloved side characters in the franchise.

What Is JP in GTA 5 Online?

JP stands for Job Points. They’re earned by completing jobs in GTA Online, things like races, deathmatches, missions, and other activities.

JP determines your rank at the end of each playlist session. The player with the most JP when a playlist ends gets a bonus. JP resets between sessions so there’s no long-term JP total to track.

In terms of importance, JP isn’t a major mechanic. It’s more of a session score than a meaningful progression metric. Most experienced GTA Online players largely ignore it.

What Is the Acid Lab in GTA 5?

The Acid Lab is a business added to GTA Online as part of the Chop Shop update. It’s one of the better passive income sources currently available.

To get the Acid Lab, complete the Last Dose mission series. After finishing the series, you’ll receive the Acid Lab for free. It generates products over time that you sell for profit.

Upgrading it with the equipment and staff upgrades increases both the product generation rate and the sale price. A fully upgraded Acid Lab is one of the most efficient businesses in GTA Online for solo players.

The acid cook, Mutt, is a character from the Last Dose missions. He runs the lab for you once it’s set up.

How to Disable BattlEye in GTA 5

BattlEye is the anti-cheat system Rockstar added to GTA Online. It’s designed to detect cheating software, mods online, and unauthorized modifications.

If you want to run single-player mods (which are fine and don’t affect other players), BattlEye can interfere. Here’s how to disable it:

  1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Find Grand Theft Auto V in your library
  4. Click “Details”
  5. There should be a toggle for BattlEye. Turn it off.

Alternatively, when launching from Steam, go to Properties, then Launch Options, and add -nobattleye to the launch arguments.

Important: Only disable BattlEye for single-player modding. Playing GTA Online with BattlEye disabled can result in a ban. Re-enable it before going online. If you’re running GTA 5 on PC and want better overall performance, our gaming PC optimization guide covers the settings that make the most significant difference.

Is GTA 5 Bilkington stock at 94.63 real?

This refers to a specific GTA 5 story moment. Bilkington Research is a stock on the LCN exchange in GTA 5. The 94.63 value comes from a specific point in the stock manipulation guide where players are told to watch for the stock to fall to that price before buying.

It’s part of the assassination mission strategy. After the hotel assassination, Bilkington drops significantly. Some guides recommend buying it at a specific low point as a secondary investment before it recovers.

Whether you see it at exactly 94.63 depends on timing and what other players on the BAWSAQ server are doing. Community activity on BAWSAQ partially influences the stock market in GTA 5, causing prices to vary.

GTA 5 Strip Club: Booty Call Unlock

The Vanilla Unicorn strip club is a property that Michael, Franklin, or Trevor can visit. After spending enough time and money on a dancer, you unlock the option to call them for a booty call, which plays out as a cutscene.

Each protagonist has their own set of dancers they can unlock. The unlock happens after building enough rapport during private dances. It doesn’t affect the story in any way.

To get there, head to the Strawberry area of South Los Santos. Large neon sign, can’t miss it.

Tips for GTA 5 Story Mode

A few things that improve the experience:

Do Lester’s assassinations last. This is the biggest one. Don’t touch them until the very end of the story. The stock market returns are dramatically higher when all three characters have maximum funds.

Buy the Los Santos Customs garages early. They generate passive income and pay for themselves quickly.

Switch characters regularly. Random events trigger for characters you’re not playing. Finding a character in a random situation you didn’t set up is one of the genuine surprises of GTA 5.

Don’t skip the Strangers and Freaks missions. Some of them are genuinely better than main story missions. The ones involving a specific supporting character near the end of the game are memorable.

Save manually often. Autosave in GTA 5 can be unreliable around major story moments. Make a habit of quick saving before anything that looks important.
