Pokemon Winds and Waves: Release, Starters, Leaks, etc.

Let me set the scene. It’s Pokemon Day 2026. The stream has been going for a while. Mobile updates, Pokopia stuff, the usual. I had one eye on it while doing something else. Then the Gen 10 trailer dropped at the very end, and I actually put my phone down.

Pokemon Winds and Waves. New region. New starters. Switch 2 exclusive. And a pile of leaks that suddenly made a lot more sense.

Here’s everything worth knowing right now.

So What Are Pokemon Winds and Waves?

In short, they’re the next mainline Pokemon games. Gen 10. Game Freak, as always.

The longer version matters more, though. This is the first time since the GBA to DS transition that a mainline Pokemon game has been built for brand new hardware from scratch. No dual release to water things down, no Switch 1 version dragging performance back. Switch 2 only. That’s actually a bigger deal than the announcement itself in some ways, because it means Game Freak has no excuses this time around.

The reveal happened February 27, 2026, at Pokemon Presents. It was the last announcement of the stream, which is how you know Nintendo is treating it as the headline. You pick Winds or Waves; your trainer’s outfit reflects your version choice, and version-exclusive Pokemon will be revealed down the line.

Release Date: 2027, Probably September

Nintendo has only said 2027. No month, no specific date.

But CentroLeaks, who called the game’s name and setting correctly before the official reveal, posted on X that September 2027 is the internal development target. September. That would be the earliest a mainline Pokemon game has launched in over 15 years. Everything usually drops in November. Vice has a solid breakdown of why a September window would be such a departure from franchise history if you want the full context. If this is true, it’s a pretty significant break from how Game Freak has operated basically my entire life as a Pokemon fan.

Worth noting that CentroLeaks did add “subject to changes or delays.” So it’s not locked in. But Game Freak doesn’t delay often once they have an internal window, which gives the September claim some weight.

Why Did It Get Pushed to 2027 at All?

This one actually annoyed people, myself included a little. The game was expected in 2026. Missing your own 30th anniversary as a franchise is not nothing. That’s a marketing moment you don’t give up lightly.

The most obvious explanation is Scarlet and Violet. That launch was genuinely bad. Not story bad or gameplay bad, the actual performance. Framedrops everywhere, pop-in that would embarrass a 2015 open world game, and a fanbase that complained loudly and consistently for months afterward. Game Freak clearly felt the heat. This delay feels like a response to that, a decision to actually finish the game before shipping it.

Whether that intention translates to a polished product, I have no idea. I’ve been burned before. But at least the thinking seems right.

It’s Switch 2 only, and That’s final

No Switch 1 version. Not a single Switch 1 logo in the reveal trailer, and Nintendo confirmed it afterward.

If you’re still on the original Switch, Pokemon Winds and Waves is probably the game that pushes you to upgrade. That’s historically how this works. Sun and Moon did it with 3DS. Sword and Shield did it when the Switch was still new enough that some people hadn’t bought in yet. Now it’s happening again.

On the topic of hardware generations and what’s coming in 2027, our PS6 release date guide covers everything Sony has confirmed and leaked on their end if you want to compare the landscape.

The New Region

The trailer showed a Southeast Asian archipelago. Volcanic cliffs, thick jungle, murky swamp areas, open coastlines, and a lot of ocean. More water than I think any Pokemon region has visually foregrounded before, which makes sense given the game is literally called Winds and Waves.

No official region name yet.

Underwater Exploration Is Back and It Looks Serious

Gen 3 had Dive. That was 2002. One game, never revisited in any meaningful way for 24 years.

Winds and Waves is bringing underwater exploration back, and leaks suggest it’s not just a gimmick this time. The picture from multiple sources is a hybrid system where underwater areas have real depth and content, not just shortcuts between islands. If that’s true, it changes how a big portion of this region actually works to explore. I’m genuinely excited about this one. Gen 3 Dive always felt like it had more potential than it ever got to show.

The “Forces of Nature” Thing

There’s a moment in the trailer where something called “forces of nature” blocks the player’s path. Weather, ocean currents, something story-related, nobody is sure. What it tells me is that the world probably isn’t fully open from day one, and honestly I don’t mind that. Scarlet and Violet let you go anywhere immediately, and the pacing suffered for it. Some natural gating is fine.

An “Infinity” Concept Leaked Too

GamesRadar flagged a CentroLeaks claim that the games might center around an “infinity” mechanic, possibly involving procedurally generated map elements. I am skeptical of this one specifically. Procedural generation in Pokemon feels very far from what Game Freak typically builds. But the source has been right on other things, so I’m not completely dismissing it either. File it under “wait and see.”

The Three Starters

These were shown at the end of the reveal trailer. I have thoughts. Nintendo Everything has the full official starter details straight from the announcement if you want the raw data.

Browt (Grass Type)

  • Category: Bean Chick Pokemon
  • Type: Grass
  • Ability: Overgrow
  • Height: 1 ft (0.3 m)
  • Weight: 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg)

Small bird. Photosynthesises through leaves on its brow. Constantly moving, described as lively but a bit clumsy, which is a character trait I find weirdly charming for a starter.

Grass birds are rare. People immediately compared it to Rowlet, and I get why, but Browt feels less polished in design, more scrappy. Not necessarily a bad thing. The clumsy, energetic bird has a certain underdog appeal. It’s my third pick of the three, but I can see exactly who the design is intended for.

Pombon (Fire Type)

  • Category: Puppy Pokemon
  • Type: Fire
  • Ability: Blaze
  • Height: 1 ft 4 in (0.4 m)
  • Weight: 14.8 lbs (6.7 kg)

Fire puppy. Has a heat-generating organ inside its lungs that makes its throat glow faintly. Described as guileless and friendly. Already the runaway fan favorite, and honestly, it deserves to be. Pombon is just a good design. It’s clean, readable, and immediately lovable without trying too hard.

The Arcanine comparisons are everywhere, and yeah, okay, fire dog, I understand the reflex. But Pombon’s energy is softer than Arcanine’s. Less majestic, more wants to sit on your lap. This is my pick.

Gecqua (Water Type)

  • Category: Water Gecko Pokemon
  • Type: Water
  • Ability: Torrent
  • Height: 1 ft (0.3 m)
  • Weight: 9.5 lbs (4.3 kg)

The water gecko fires springy balls of water from its tail. The sleekest of the three. Gecqua has a small but very passionate fanbase already forming, which is usually the sign of a starter that rewards patience. People who pick the less obvious one tend to feel vindicated later.

Leaked evolution details suggest Gecqua’s final form might be the best of the trio. But one of the “leaks” that spread on X was literally just Frogadier from Gen 6 with edits, so treat any evolution claims as fiction until proven otherwise.

Leaks: What’s Actually Worth Reading

Leaks have been around since 2024. A lot of them turned out right. Here’s how I’d break it down.

The Ones Already Confirmed

Before the official reveal, leakers correctly called the game’s name, the Southeast Asian island setting, the return of underwater exploration, and the types of all three starters. That’s a strong track record for one set of sources. It doesn’t make every future claim from those sources automatically true, but it’s worth factoring in.

September 2027 Launch Window

Already covered above. CentroLeaks is the internal target, but it is subject to change. This is the leak I’d pay most attention to right now.

Your Rival Will Be the Opposite Gender

Game Rant reported via CentroLeaks that your rival mirrors the opposite gender of your chosen protagonist. Some games do this, while others don’t. If true, this is an interesting design choice, but it doesn’t change gameplay much either way.

Starter Evolution Leaks Are Fake, Ignore Them

Fake evolution screenshots spread all over X in early 2026. One of them used an edited Frogadier image for Gecqua’s second stage. The whole batch got debunked quickly. Right now there are zero credible starter evolution leaks. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing or making things up.

If you enjoy digging into Pokemon fan projects while waiting for official news, our Pokemon Gamma Emerald guide covers one of the more interesting Emerald-based fan games that released recently.

What We Know About Gameplay

Not much confirmed, a few things strongly hinted at.

The trailer showed open-world exploration that looked like Scarlet and Violet but was actually running well. Switch 2 is doing visible work there. Draw distance looked better, and environments cleaner. Small things, but they add up. Destructoid’s first impressions of the reveal trailer are worth reading if you want a second opinion on what the visuals actually showed.

Underwater exploration is the wildcard. If it’s a full system, it changes the structure of the game. If it’s a side feature, it’s still neat but less impactful. Leaks lean toward the former.

The battle format hasn’t been confirmed. Most people assume turn-based since this is a mainline title, not a Legends spin-off. I agree with that assumption, but I’ve made worse bets. It also wouldn’t surprise me if real-time elements from Legends Z-A bled in somewhere.

The “forces of nature” path-blocking mechanic is either a clever world design feature or a handful of scripted story moments. Can’t tell from what’s been shown.

Everything Still Unknown

A lot, honestly.

Box legendaries haven’t been teased at all. The official region name is still unannounced. No new Pokémon have been shown beyond the three starters. Pokedex size, online features, co-op, DLC plans, pricing, all of it is completely in the dark.

Leakers are suggesting there won’t be major new Winds and Waves information until 2027. The absence of Winds and Waves from the Nintendo Direct in June 2026 backed that up. If that pattern holds, the next Pokemon Presents in early 2027 is probably where the real information cycle starts.

Gen 10 has a lot to prove after Scarlet and Violet launched in rough shape. Switch 2 hardware gives Game Freak more room than they have had in years. Whether they use it well is the question the whole fanbase is waiting to answer.
